Strength of Materials & Statics: Stress, Beams, Torsion & Buckling Guide

Statics and strength of materials show how forces are carried by structures and how materials respond to load. These guides cover tension, bending, torsion, buckling and combined loading, with practice problems, lab reports and automotive design examples.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between statics and strength of materials?

Statics finds the forces and moments acting on a body in equilibrium, while strength of materials uses those forces to calculate stress, strain and deformation inside the body.

What is Euler buckling?

Euler buckling is the sudden sideways deflection of a slender column under compressive load. The critical load depends on the material’s modulus, the cross-section and the column’s effective length.

What is combined loading?

Combined loading is when a member carries more than one type of load at once, such as axial force and bending, so the stresses from each are added to find the total.

What is fatigue failure?

Fatigue failure is the weakening and cracking of a component under repeated cyclic stress, even when each cycle is below the material’s static strength.
